Earth Art

 In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, in opposition to the commercialization of art, and as a rejection of the gallery and museum as the location for art, artists such as Dennis Oppenheim, Robert Smithson, Peter Fend and Christo and Jean-Claude engaged in a movement called Earth Art, also known as Land Art. The ephemeral nature of the works focused on the landscape as its backdrop and challenged traditional notions of what art is and how it could be commodified and recorded.
